2203)John Dryden was the most important critic and dramatist of the Restoration age.
He wrote: Heroic stanzas on the death of Oliver Cromwell, Annus Mirabilis, Astraea Redux, Religio Laici, MacFlecknoe, The Hind and the Panther, A song for St Cecilia’s Day, Absalom and Achitophel and Alexander’s Feast.
Dryden produced thirty tragedies, comedies, and other plays.
Important work in prose were the Preface to the Fables and Of Dramatic Poesy an Essay.
He translate in heroic couplets the Aeneid and Eclogues. Important characteristic of Dryden’s style is the “closed heroic couplet”.
For this reasons was considered “father of the English criticism”.
