La canzone, a differenza di quanto molti possono pensare, non è solo una celebrazione musicale della Young Men's Christian Association, ma è anche un riferimento all'abitudine, comune fra gli uomini omosessuali nell'epoca pre-Stonewall, di frequentare le palestre annesse agli ostelli, frequentatissime dai giovani proletari, come luoghi di approccio ed incontro a scopo sessuale. La canzone si rivolge infatti ad un giovane uomo ("young man"), che viene invitato alla YMCA per scoprirne le gioie.
