What does "on the trail we blaze" literally mean? Is it something like "we open tha way"...?

When the first men went into unknown territory, totally uninhabited land, they were called "trail blazers" cut a path through jungles with their swords, horses, etc, --which the people who came later could see --as a blazing (Burning) path in the dark jungles.

All pioneers were trail-blazers!
